From Summit High

Ms. Butler:

First, by way of reassurance, we will not be holding you in any way responsible for your prior outburst. The general consensus is that, given the harm that befell Roderick and your own distress, this was a perfectly understandable reaction. It may also please you to hear that the staff of Summit High have been cooperating fully with authorities, who are currently planning on charging Roderick's assailant with second degree assault. These are serious charges, and rest assured Roderick will not have to deal with this boy in the future.

However, this represents the end of our involvement. We have conducted an internal investigation and have found no evidence that Roderick was the victim of significant violence or that he complained of being a victim of serious violence prior to the incident. We find no evidence of anything more serious than trivial pranks and teasing and thus nothing that could possibly foretell what would happen. As such, we will not be taking any responsibility beyond what we have already done.

We are sure that this is unsatisfying to you, but there are ways that you and Roderick can aid us in the future. Encourage Roderick to report any and all threats or acts of intimidation so that we can properly assess any risks. We might also recommend counseling, both to address any residual trauma and to help Roderick overcome his social deficiencies.
